Did Tolkien rip off Harry Potter?

Have you ever noticed any similarities between Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings?  Well an IMDb user believes Tolkein stole some of these ideas from J.K. Rowling. We of course know this is impossible.  Read below to see just what this message board user wrote to make his case!

Overall, I like Lord of the Rings. However, I do feel that Tolkien kind of rips off Harry Potter in many ways. There are several parallels, such as elves, dwarfs, wizards, goblins, trolls, magic (especially invisibility), etc. Sauron is referred to as “Dark Lord” just like Voldemort is. There is also the elder white-haired bearded wizard who serves as a mentor, Gandalf, who is reminiscent of Dumbledore. Some of the character names are similar, such as Wormtongue as opposed to Wormtail, too. There is even a gigantic spider (Shelob) at the end of “The Two Towers” that reminds one of Aragog from Chamber of Secrets. I even noticed that the plots of both series begin with the protagonists’ birthday. Now I see that Tolkien, this unoriginal bastard, is coming out with The Hobbit in December. This would be fine, but why didn’t he just write this book first to begin with? I still like Lord of the Rings, though–don’t get me wrong–but I wonder if Tolkien has ever said in interviews whether he borrowed elements from Harry Potter. I’ll be watching the extended DVDs later this week and I think he’s featured on the commentary track, so I look forward to that.

  1. I hope they were trolling because that person would just be plain stupid! XD haha wow. “Lacking in originality.” Yeah, you’re right, Lord of the Rings has only been out much longer than Harry Potter, so Heaven forbid…

  2. The mistake of this troller is that he/she did not find the proper balance between “actually good typing skills” and “horrible 2nd grade keyboard mashing”. To make a believable trolling of a stupid person, you have to type like you’re generally smart enough to graduate high school, but not smart enough to care about whether or not you say “your”, “you’re” or “ur”.

  3. You do realise that The Lord Of The Rings was written and published long before Harry Potter? And that The Hobbit was written first, but the movie was never made (until now). Do your research before trolling :L

  4. Are you crazy?! J.R.R Tolkien’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ books were published in NINETEEN-FREAKING-FIFTY-FOUR!
I don’t know whether you’re just plain stupid or whether you’re trolling, but I really hope next time you find some reliable sources before you speak.

  5. I love Harry Potter with all of my heart, but you are freaking stupid. Lord of the Rings was published WAY before Harry Potter was, so if anything J.K. got some of her ideas from Lord of the Rings. And is that a thing to be ashamed of? No! She made it her story! But don’t go blaming Tolkein for stealing some Harry Potter elements.

  6. Stupid people make me giggle. XD Whether this guy was trolling or not, it’s pretty dang funny, you gottta admit….

  7. Lord if the rings came out many years ago, THE AUTHOR DIED before Harry potter was published. It would make sense if Rowling got the idea from Tolkien though, if she did that is not something to be ashamed of, he is Basically a legend for fantasy novels, now so is Rowling.

  8. this person just hates the lord of the ring which was published in 1954 and harry potter was published in 1997 please do your research before posting somethi

  9. The tragedy in this post is calling JRR Tolkien an unoriginal B******D. If someone is going to cast an insult, they should at least make sure it is deserved. Tokien was and still is the model of fantasy that a majority of writers emulate in multiple ways, myself included. Did Rowling take ideas from him? I would say yes. and well she should. The HP series is exceptional in its own right.

  10. I am going to assume, for the sake of my sanity, that they were trolling.
On another note, I HAVE totally noticed some of those similarities. Especially Wormtail and Wormtongue. I call them by each others’ names.

  11. This has to be the most ridiculously stupid fucking thing I have ever heard.
If anything, harry potter ripped offed Lord of the RIngs..
Do you know how long ago Lord of the rings was written? Tolkien was long dead by the time Harry Potter was even an idea to Rowling.
You have no idea what you are talking about.
I am a HUGE fan of both series, movies and books, stop being stupid.

  12. This person is obiously stupid… Lord of the Rings came out WAY before JK Rowling ever thought of HP.. heck she was probably not alive yet…. And Tolkein is dead now… Only a fool would think HP was written first. Bloody hell, that person was dumb. *facepalm*

  13. Okay, seriously?? READ THIIS READ THIS READ THIS READ THIS READ THIS!!!! Tolkien wrote Lord of the Rings in the 1930′s. I”m pretty sure JK Rowling ripped off most of HER stuff from him. Enough said. e.e

  14. ok heres the runndown…Lord of the Rings trilogy (not the hobbit which was much earlier) was published from 1954-55, Tolkien died in 1973, Harry Potter was first published in 1997…WTF is this guy smoking…nothing against Harry Potter but their fandom is a bit ignorant

  15. Rowling ripped off Tolkien & Dahl for the books & “Young Sherlock Holmes” for the films. That’s all one needs to know.
